CAN YOU EXPLAIN HOW DID THE BAND NAME BORN AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Rober an me were searching for a name by playing with song titles. Instead of Shower Slaves or Power Graves we decided us for RAW ENSEMBLE, because noboby else could introduce our band on stage better as Tom Arayer! “And the next band is calles RAAAAWW EEENSEBLE!”

For real, nobody will hear the difference between raw and war...

WHO ARE THE BAND MEMBERS AND WHERE ARE THEY FROM?

Mad: Bass

Brecko: Vox

Uffe: Drums

Dennis: Guitar

Johannes: Guitar (recently jumped in for Fab)

Fab: Guitar (had to leave after finishing "Suffer Well" due his university studies in another city called Würzburg)

RAW ENSEMBLE started 2010 in Ulm, Germany, with Robert Bickerich and Dennis Eickenhorst on guitars. They have known about a new drummer in Ulm so Dennis contacted him and the RAW ENSEMBLE was ready to start with some basic ideas.

After a few days Mary (Bass) and Chris (vocals) completed the first line up. After some months there was the first gig with six songs which were recorded one year later for the first mini CD “Jesus is back...and he is fucking angry!” It was released in january 2012.

One year later Rob left the band for playing more classic guitar, but he is still the man behind the camera for live pictures!

At first he left a big hole so that Mary and Chris left the band also and Dennis was working some months in a different country. After he returned RAW ENSEMBLE has found two new members for bass (Mad) and vocals (Brecko)! So there were some new songs written and after a gig with the legendary Possessed Fab was asking us if we are still searching for a second guitar player. Of course we did and after two hours at the rehearsal room Fab completed the ENSEMBLE!

In the end of 2015 the second CD “Suffer Well!” was recorded in Turbine powered studio in Ulm and released in June 2016. After the release party at the Hexenhaus in Ulm Fab left the band and Johannes joined the Ensemble directly at this evening while playing two of our older songs!

TELL US PLEASE SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR LAST JOB.

I am working as a research and devellopment master of electronic for TPMS Systems.

DO YOU HAVE PREVIOUS EXPERIENCES BEFORE YOU FORMED THE BAND?

I was playing in several band in different cities in germany before starting Raw. I was singer in Eliminator/Terrified and played guitar at Tenebae Mundi, Fearer, The Mistral, No Brainer, Drastic Violence, Worm Cluster and Bass at ...of Trees and Orchids.

WHAT ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?

Basically it is thrash metal in any form with spices of death, doom, speed, heavy and progressive metal. Riffs like Exodus, the energy of Overkill or Demolition Hammer and songwritingh like DEATH is what I prefer.

REGARDING THE SONGWRITING, TELL US PLEASE SOMETHING ABOUT THE TEXTS. WHO TAKE CARE ABOUT THE LYRICS?

Denis (Brecko) is almost responsible for the lyrics. We are thinking about how the world turns to this actual situation. Why is there so much hate of different cultures, egoism, terrifed of losing your own identity? Why are 60 million people worldeide are escaping from their homes? Why is it possible that Donald Trump could be a president? Do you want him as your boss at your company? And as a boss at your country? Really? Did you forget what happened 80 years ago in germany? I could not understand and we are serching for answers.

HOW IS BORN THE ARTWORK? WHO CREATED IT AND WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

It is a part of the trypticon by Hieronymus Bosch where you can see some “refugees” crossing a bridge. That stands for the escape route between Syria and Europe which is very risky and damgerous. What will they find on the other side? The paradise, the hell, slavery? They do not even have a second opportunity for leaving their homes.

DO YOU SING IN ENGLISH OR IN ANY OTHER LANGUAGE? WHY THIS CHOICE?

We “sing” in english, the metal tongue because I think gernam and metal do not fit together.

WHERE DO YOU CREATE YOUR MUSIC?

Everybody who has some ideas brings them to the rehearsal room and we try to create a good song together. Then we are jamming and if there will be a good idea we figure it out how this riff, groove or whatever can grab you by your balls or smash your head against the speakers. The song has to work in the rehearsal room. We do not write at the computer and try to learn it at home. Copy and paste? No way...

CAN YOU TELL SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR LIVE EXPERIENCE? DID YOU PERFORM SOMEWHERE SO FAR? HOW IS YOUR APPROACH WITH THE PUBLIC?

We are very proud that we had the chance to play with some heroes of our youth: Possessed, Solstice, Fleshcrawl (25 aniversary show) or even Warbringer, Hackneyed or Mynded. Mostly we are playing in the souther region of Germany because it is very difficult to get some gigs in different cities. Many bands will share the gig, but we could not play every month in our hometown. Of course we want to play more gigs, but we are only able to play at weekends. And it seems that every metal fan in germany has two or three bands who want to play...

CAN YOU PLEASE GIVE US ANY INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR RELEASES?

1. Jesus is back...and he´s fucking angry!

https://rawensemble.bandcamp.com/album/jesus-is-back-and-he-is-fucking-angry

“Jesus...”  was a home recording 6 track CD. We met at a friends home (Oak, Attic studio in Ulm) who had some recording equipment, had some beers and made some songs. After mixing the stuff we thought it sounds so good that we decided to make a professional mastering with Role at Tonmeisterei in Oldenburg.

2. Suffer Well:

https://rawensemble.bandcamp.com/album/suffer-well

For the second CD we thought that we have to enter a more professional studio to record in a much bigger room as the living room of oak. Metal has to be loud! So we entered the Turbine powered studio in Ulm in November 2015 to Dezember 2015 and mixed it in february 2016. It sounded much “bigger” during the recording session, but it was fucking freezing!

A rat cutted the main cable anywhere in front of the fuse box and we did not have the power to use the recording equipment and the heating system at the same time! We had an extra cable from the toilet so the door was permanetly open! So we had to hurry up and the drummer was playing a little bit faster to get warm!

Poor stiff little fingers to play at icecold metal strings...

IN ITALY THERE ARE MANY METAL BANDS. GIVE YOUR OPINION ON MUSIC SCENE TODAY IN OUR COUNTRY.

It seems to be that there are two metal scenes in germany: the official one and the underground.

The last years I prefer more and more the underground, because there you can find the more interesting bands! The “official” gigs are very, very expensive and if I was in Munich or Stuttgart I was dissapointed about the sound, the time or even the beer prices. The ticket prices are almost 6 times higher as a underground gig in my hometown and the gigs are ending at 11pm.

At underground gigs every band is able to play minimum 45 Minutes. You can see 4 band for 6-10 € and they are playing until 2-3 am in the morning. This party is much better, you can get in contact with the musicians ans drink some beers because you do not have to drive 1 or 2 hours home! Ans on  underground gig you will only find music friends! Everybody comes because of the bands and this is what metal/music is all about! And who knows, maybe the next superstar comes to your town? Support the underground, it is the base of music!

WHAT’S THE REASON YOU DECIDED TO PLAY A SPECIFIC INSTRUMENT?

I wanted to play drums at the age of 6 but my father said it will be to loud. So I decided to play guitar but the teachers said my fingers are to short! That is the reason I learned organ for 6 boring years...and after I smashed my fists onto my keyboard and screamed that I hate this fuking instrument I was allowed to stop! I did not know that my mother was inside the room! She was very astonished that I did not like this instrument.

I stopped playing an instrument and went our to play soccer every day. 6 years later during my education at a company my best friend bought himself a bass guitar and played in a metal band. This was so cool that I decided to buy myself a guitar at the age of 19.

IF YOU SHOULD CHOOSE TO BE PART OF A FAMOUS BAND, FOR EACH OF YOU, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

All: The manager Metallica and Iron Maiden! They are making the biggest money!

And playing in a cool underground band to have some fun....

Raw Ensemble, for example!

YOU CAN END THE INTERVIEW AS YOU LIKE...

The Raw Ensemble like to thank all of you for being interested in us! Check us out at bandcamp! Maybe we can get the chance to play in your local club for a couple of friends and some warm beers or an icecold (?) Barrique Wine! In Italy? Yeah, that will be great! And it is not so far away...
