CAN YOU EXPLAIN HOW DID THE BAND NAME BORN AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

John, Lead Vocalist and Thrash warrior here, I love questions about our name, because I love our name. The name Torrefy was suggested by our drummer. It means to scorch or parch with intense heat, it is often used to harden metal or sanitize drugs. The combination of intensity, metal (and drugs) suited our style and attitude so it was an instant fit, not to mention we are yet to encounter another band with the same name.

WHO ARE THE BAND MEMBERS AND WHERE ARE THEY FROM? IF YOU ARE A ONE-MAN BAND, CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS CHOICE?

Vocals- John Ferguson

Lead Guitar- Adam Henry

Rhythm Guitar- Ben Gerencser

Bass Guitar- Simon Smith

Drums- Dan Laughy

We all currently live in Victoria British Columbia on the West coast of Canada.

TELL US PLEASE SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR LAST JOB.

Our last gig was a double bill with Skeletonwitch where we released our newest album “The Infinity Complex”. All the bands crushed it, of course, and there are videos available on youtube of both the show and the album in it entirety.

DO YOU HAVE PREVIOUS EXPERIENCES BEFORE YOU FORMED THE BAND?

Dan and Ben have worked in projects prior to Torrefy. I was in a garage punk band that barely got going, and both Simon and Adam took their first musical endeavors with Torrefy!

WHAT ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?

We draw influences from all over the Heavy Metal map, including, but not limited to Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, DRI, Vektor, Skeletonwitch, Pantera, Lamb of God, Alice in Chains, and Toxic Holocaust. Within the band you have fans of Punk, Hip Hop, Classic rock, Folk and of course Heavy fucking Metal, making for a very eclectic musical experience. We essentially try to write the kind of music we would want to listen to.

REGARDING THE SONGWRITING, TELL US PLEASE SOMETHING ABOUT THE TEXTS. WHO TAKE CARE ABOUT THE LYRICS?

On our first album, “Thrash and Burn” the lyrics were written by Simon, Dan and myself. On “The Infinity Complex” I wrote all the lyrics as it is a concept album of my creation. The story is a universe spanning narrative touching on themes like human significance, neutral moralities, and the overall pointlessness of ambition.

HOW IS BORN THE ARTWORK? WHO CREATED IT AND WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

The whole band brainstormed together to create the concept for the album’s artwork, which depicts a second universe tearing its way into our own as a helpless society looks on. The image was brought to life by Richard Sampson from Art of Nerdgore.

DO YOU SING IN ENGLISH OR IN ANY OTHER LANGUAGE? WHY THIS CHOICE?

I sing in english as it is my native language, but I intend on writing a song in Russian based on a legend from Russian lore.

WHERE DO YOU CREATE YOUR MUSIC?

So far all our music has been written and conceived in a workshop owned by the family of our Lead Guitarist, Adam Henry.

CAN YOU TELL SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR LIVE EXPERIENCE? DID YOU PERFORM SOMEWHERE SO FAR? HOW IS YOUR APPROACH WITH THE PUBLIC?

We have played countless shows around Vancouver and Vancouver Island, and we have a very open approach with the public. Please feel free to contact us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or via email.

CAN YOU PLEASE GIVE US ANY INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR RELEASES?

So far we have released two full length albums. Our first album is called “Thrash and Burn” and is a fair example of where we were both musically and professionally at that point. Our follow up album “The Infinity Complex” Is an ambitious concept album that we believe represents exactly how we want to sound as a band. It has been described as Progressive Thrash by critics and I believe has many surprises for the listener to enjoy over and over again.

IF YOU HAVE PREVIOUS PUBLICATIONS, WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS THAT DIFFERENTIATE THEM FROM EACH OTHER?

“Thrash and Burn” has a much more simplistic approach to Thrash metal than the second album does, and there is a stark difference in audio quality. The second album has a run time nearly twice as long as the first album and much more complex lyrical themes to match the intricate riffs and rhythms.

IN ITALY THERE ARE MANY METAL BANDS. GIVE YOUR OPINION ON MUSIC SCENE TODAY IN OUR COUNTRY.

The only Italian Metal bands I know are Rhapsody of Fire, Lacuna Coil, and Graveworm. I like Graveworm and Rhapsody of Fire quite a bit, and would love to learn some more great Italian metal, especially Thrash!

WHAT’S THE REASON YOU DECIDED TO PLAY A SPECIFIC INSTRUMENT?

I’ve always enjoyed writing and had a flair for performing which really lent itself to being a frontman. I have a lot of energy which I like to utilize in our live performances, running, jumping, headbanging and even jumping in the crowd to mosh to my own band!

IF YOU SHOULD CHOOSE TO BE PART OF A FAMOUS BAND, FOR EACH OF YOU, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

I would love to try and lend my vocal style to Black Metal acts such as Ghost Bath, Carpathian Forest or Rimfrost.

YOU CAN END THE INTERVIEW AS YOU LIKE...

Thank you for your time! Go check out the album on Itunes, Spotify, Bandcamp, youtube or google play and we will try our best to come to Italy on our many travels!
