DOMANDE A CURA DI MELISSA GHEZZO
CAN YOU EXPLAIN HOW DID THE BAND NAME BORN AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
I struggled for a while to come up with a cool band name that wasn’t already taken. Running through some words I like, I realised I wanted “Command” to be used somewhere and ended up landing on ON MY COMMAND. I found out afterwards that one of the new Star Wars characters, Captain Phasma, uses ‘on my command’ but that is not where I got it.
WHO ARE THE BAND MEMBERS AND WHERE ARE THEY FROM? IF YOU ARE A ONE-MAN BAND, CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS CHOICE?
At the moment, the band is just me, Sean Mackay. The album was recorded completely in the home studio by myself, and I took on the role of guitars, vocals, bass, keys programming, you name it. The original plan was to have another vocalist but that didn’t work out so I ended up doing it. If the band is taken live, then of course members that share the same vision will be recruited.
TELL US PLEASE SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR LAST JOB.
I am not a full time musician and currently work in economics and finance. While that does reduce the time available to actually make music, it does enable me to find the money to actually invest in some good artwork, packaging and merchandise for the band.
DO YOU HAVE PREVIOUS EXPERIENCES BEFORE YOU FORMED THE BAND?
This band is my first real musical project. It has been fun and enjoyable to achieve something that I only dreamt about doing for quite a while.
WHAT ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?
I listen to a lot of metal and hard rock, in all the various sub-genres. However, I really wanted this band to be based in classic metal sounds, starting of course with the legends of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, combined with the thrash sounds of early Metallica and a little bit of early power metal.
REGARDING THE SONGWRITING, TELL US PLEASE SOMETHING ABOUT THE TEXTS. WHO TAKE CARE ABOUT THE LYRICS?
All the lyrics were written by me on the album. A lot of them, apart from Walls and Borders, which is a little political, tell a story. For example, the final track ‘Through the Dardanelles’ tells the story of Australian soldiers in World War 1 and how that campaign is still commemorated to this day.
HOW IS BORN THE ARTWORK? WHO CREATED IT AND WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
The Artwork to the album was done by the legendary German artist Andreas Marschall. He’s done the cover art for a heap of big name metal bands like Hammerfall, Kreator, Obituary and Blind Guardian but to name a few. He even did the covers for In Flames for the Colony, Whoracle and Jester Race albums.
The artwork depicts a scene from the song “Apparitions” which is about treasure hunters opening tombs and secrets that should really stay sealed. I think it’s a great cover, and I was happy to pay the money to get a quality piece of art rather than some cheap digital design.
DO YOU SING IN ENGLISH OR IN ANY OTHER LANGUAGE? WHY THIS CHOICE?
The album is all in English as that is what I speak.
WHERE DO YOU CREATE YOUR MUSIC?
The album was written and recorded in my home recording set up. Once it was mixed, I sent it online to Nagasaki Sound in the USA to be mastered.
CAN YOU TELL SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR LIVE EXPERIENCE? DID YOU PERFORM SOMEWHERE SO FAR? HOW IS YOUR APPROACH WITH THE PUBLIC?
ON MY COMMAND is yet to play live. Hopefully next year sometime perhaps.
CAN YOU PLEASE GIVE US ANY INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR RELEASES?
APPARITIONS is the only release by ON MY COMMAND at this stage. Some bonus songs may be released digitally in the coming months.
IN ITALY THERE ARE MANY METAL BANDS. GIVE YOUR OPINION ON MUSIC SCENE TODAY IN OUR COUNTRY.
To be honest I don’t know much Italian music, apart from Lacuna Coil, Pavarotti and Bocelli!
WHAT’S THE REASON YOU DECIDED TO PLAY A SPECIFIC INSTRUMENT?
I was just drawn to guitar for some reason.
IF YOU SHOULD CHOOSE TO BE PART OF A FAMOUS BAND, FOR EACH OF YOU, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Judas Priest, Blind Guardian or Amorphis. They just make interesting music!
