What does your band name mean and where did it come from?

mrGeneSimmons: Pokerface is a spin-off term of Ace of Spades, Motorhead's killing hit. When we've started the project in 2013, we were influenced by an old-school metal like Slayer, Venom, Motorhead. So we've decided to use Pokerface as an ironic name for our band.

How long have you all known each other? How did you meet?

mrGeneSimmons: Pokerface is not another one "best-friends-decided-to-make-another-stupid-metal-band". Pokerface is a project and all members just work together. So, I cant say that we are know each other for years. Some of ppl are new, some of them I know for a couple of years.

LadyOwl: I meet all guys when I joined the band. In February of 2016. Then a few people were changed. The exception is our new guitarist Blade, I've met him almost 4 years ago on the casting to my another band Korrozia Metalla, he tried to replace our guitarist who unfortunately passed away, but failed it hehe. Despite this I noticed that he is a very good guitar player and after few years asked him to try himself in Pokerface.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs?

LadyOwl: Guitarists are writing some riffs, Dmitry is producing it and adding drums, then we rehearsing it, and while guys are playing I'm trying to create vocal melodies. We had the lyricist Nana Traum Mond for the last record and after all musical parts were ready, she did the lyrics. That way worked for the album "Game On", maybe next time the process will be different:).

So, about topics. "Game on" is not an ordinary album consisted of separated songs, but has its own deep sense and concept. All songs have kind of certain line and different games of chance, casino theme, inner monsters and fears of people who seek for simple ways to solve difficult self-problems inspired their conception. Everyone knows that the most simple way as usual is not the right one, but being under the social pressure force the hero of this album to make aggressive and cruel decisions. His own behavior puts him into a trap of greed, fear and betrayal. His inner problems appear in images of monsters like Bone Reaper and Fatal Scythe, which hunt him and lead to the deeper layer of his own subconscious. The games that demons make him to play are in general the ways to solve these personal problems. The hero tries this different ways each of which leads to loss of all he earned during his entire life. The labyrinth with no beginning, no end no exit. But the diamonds are formed only under the great pressure and temperature, and the hero of this album is not the exception. In the end of his struggle, he understands, that the maintreasure he owns is himself as a person, and until he remembers who he is, he is winner in all dreadful demons' games and the one who won his own life and right to live as a strong-willed person.

How has your music evolved since your first began playing music together?

Ritter: This is thrash metal, how can this music evolve? Every perfect riff is already done. So, we can just add something new from other genres. This is really interesting: you can do completely new music by adding little third-party features (growling vocs, melodic parts, groove), without losing basic old qualities of thrash metal (speed, aggression, drive, simplicity). And it will sound still like thrash metal. Also you can carefully change proportions. Like a chief-cooker.

LadyOwl: Well, I believe we sound better with new vocals hahah. Sounds like 2017, with modern vocal teqniques. 'Cause mostly thrash bands sound like 1980 with some pig-dog I don't know what else vocals ahaha ugh I dont like to listen to it, sorry ahhahaha

Who are your major influences?

Ritter: Big Teutonic 4, Slayer, Sepultura, Cannibal Corpse. Also I like finding something completely new in music through Opeth, Devin Townsend, Tool, Death.

LadyOwl: For me it's Arch Enemy, Lacrimosa, Nightwish, the Runaways and some solo singers.                                                                          continue...

When did you form your band? What inspired you to make music together?

mrGeneSimmons: We started project in 2013 with the goal to make Pokerface well-known international band.

Could you briefly describe the music-making process?

mrGeneSimmons: On the new album we used the following process. Guitarists compose riffs or something like melody or chords sequense and give me to listen. Then I build construction of the song, add drums and bass, and we are trying to play it on rehearsal. Make some changes again and again before the music become cool for us. After that we make the lyrics and our Lady Owl make vocal line. That's it - the song is ready!

Which songs do you perform most frequently?

LadyOwl: We constantly are playing "Kingdom of Hate" and "Under the Pentagram Sign".

What’s your ultimate direction for your band?

mrGeneSimmons: I'm not sure that I understand the question correctly... If you mean music direction, then we will continue with the same way - making speed energetic and fun music with influence of melodic and groove. If you mean what is our direction in music business industry, than we will strive to the world domination :)

What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands?

mrGeneSimmons: You have to ask yourself one question: why do you want to make music. If you answer honestly - it will be easy to reach your goal. Just keep working hard and make awesome stuff. And good luck!

LadyOwl: Don't do it XD Find a good job and make money!!!

Any last words?

Ritter: Keep true, listen to good music and come to metal shows - you'll always find there beer, fun, soulmates, killer music and crazy people. And you'll never be alone!
