Interview By Mauro Spadoni With The Chilean Progressive Death Doom Metal Band Weight Of Emptiness
Hi Weight Of Emptiness welcome on Insane Voices Labirynth’s pages. First of all, would you present yourself to our readers?
Hello friends of Insane Voices Labirynth, my name is Mario Urra, bassist of the Chilean band Weight Of Emptiness, which I joined in November 2018, which makes me the newest member of the group.
What can you tell us about your last LP “Anfractuous Moments For Redemption”?
"Anfractuous Moments For Redemption" was our debut album, which has successfully opened the doors to us in the world of metal, I personally love the atmosphere and the mystique that comes from listening to it, however, today, our attention is in our second LP "Conquering The Deep Cycle", which will be released this coming August 31, and which takes us to a next level of composition, both in music and thematic.
Can you explain how a Weight of Emptiness' s song takes form?
Musically, all the members of the band work on riffs and melodies, which we present to the rest, and that is where the real challenge begins: to be able to give shape to a piece of music that everyone likes, that entertains us to interpret it. As for the stories under the music, we try to keep them under one concept, both LPs have a definite concept, and as in music, we all participate in the writing of the lyrics.
Where you take inspiration for the texts in your songs?
How I told you before, the process of the stories in each topic, we all do it and it has to have a consequence with the concept of the album. Personally I had to write the lyric for the song "Lapse Of Insanity", which will come on the new album, and that tells a story of mental despair in the short term and whose way of escape finds it among the drugs and associations with beings of the hell. This new album comes with very entertaining stories that mark the step for the human being to be able to conquer your fears, your uncontrolled emotions, your inner voices, your life suckers.
What are your influences?
My influences are many from The Beatles to Cannibal Corpse, from King Crimson to Mayhem, within the band we all have a very broad spectrum in the different genres of rock and metal, and that is quite positive when making arrangements and composing. I think there are moments in life you are going to know different bands, and they are marking your musical formation.
In your songs your singer uses not only growl vocals. What are your singer's influences?
Alejandro Ruiz is the most versatile there is to listen to rock and metal, besides having a very good ear, he is one of the most active composers of the band, he is a very complete musician and a brutal frontman.
Have you done any covers live?
So far, live, we have only played our songs, we do not close to the possibility of paying tribute to one of our favorite bands. For this second album, comes a cover of a Twilight Mist song, called "Two Tears Alone", although technically it is a cover, the mentioned band was composed of three of the current members of Weight Of Emptiness, so I do not know how much cover it is, the clear thing is that we will interpret it live, since it sounds brutal.
Can you describe us the Underground Metal scene in Chile?
I like the phrase, Chile Metal country, crossing our long and narrow strip of land, you can find excellent bands. The love what there is to make metal and with very few resources, does not stop what in my country there are bands of world quality. We need more diffusion and distribution so that the world can see the excellent work that is done in Chile. I do not say that my music is the best, but I have met the best people sharing the love for metal.
How many gigs have you done until today? Where?
Ugh, as the most recent member of the band I've only had the pleasure of debuting at the Lado Salvaje Festival, in Mendoza Argentina, but previously Weight Of Emptiness has turned, thanks to the debut album, through Chile and a tour through Mexico, which for the band was a wonderful window to the world. We hope soon to have news of our presentations and tours promoting our second album "Conquering The Deep Cycle".
Describe your music using three words
Better yet, I describe it to you in one word ... "Unbreakable" ... hahahaha
